High Quality Furniture and Woodwork in Portland, Maine

CNC Customer Success Story

Graywood Maine was established with a clear vision: to bring high-quality, handcrafted furniture, wall art, and finely crafted woodwork to the market, while also offering CNC milling services to the Portland area. The goal was to support fellow woodworkers, architects, home builders, and anyone else who could benefit from CNC milling but may not be ready to invest in the equipment, software, and training required to bring this technology in-house. By making CNC technology the core of both their product offerings and services, Graywood Maine aims to enhance the capabilities of their clients while delivering exceptional craftsmanship.

Founded in 2024, Graywood Maine has quickly focused on setting up their facility, building their workshop, and spreading the word about their service offerings. In parallel, Graywood has been hard at work developing the initial product line, ensuring that each piece reflects their commitment to quality and innovation.

“My journey with Techno CNC began in the early 2000s when I operated a Techno CNC mill at The Matrix Art Collective in Guttenberg, NJ, just across the Hudson River from Manhattan. At that facility, we utilized a Techno Premium Class CNC mill with an 18-inch gantry to carve foam, wood, composites, wax, and a variety of materials used in fine art and sculptural fabrication”, said Eric Gray, founder of Graywood Maine. “When I founded Graywood Maine, it was only natural to consider Techno CNC again. Techno has a long-standing reputation for building strong, rigid, and robust machines. After comparing multiple options, I decided to purchase another Techno CNC mill to be the heart of my new company”.

“Our Techno CNC mill allows us to create detailed, intricate carvings in hardwoods, transforming custom artistic designs from concept into beautifully finished pieces. We integrate these sculptural details into our furniture line, enhancing both the functionality and aesthetic appeal of our products. Additionally, we’ve already begun working with customers to support their production needs, cutting cabinet parts for millwork shops and crafting custom wooden elements for home builders”.

Recently, Graywood was approached by a customer in need of large pediment brackets for the exterior of a custom home. “After collaborating with our local hardwood supplier, we selected ribbon sapele as the material of choice. Starting with rough 10/4 lumber, we milled the wood on our jointer, planer, and table saw before preparing the larger pieces directly on the CNC mill”, said Gray. “The entire design process was handled in CAD, including the joinery details. We even created a small-scale rapid prototype to ensure that the parts would fit together perfectly and that the joinery plan was solid. The precision of the Techno CNC mill allowed us to produce highly accurate components, which were then hand-finished and assembled to create the pediment brackets. The end result was a set of beautifully crafted, sturdy brackets that exceeded our customer’s expectations”.
